So I was doing some research the other day and came across something that surprised me. Alien Abduction Insurance. I was surprised by the fact that it exists but even more so that it was mentioned so casually in the article. In either case, I decided to look into it. Here’s what I found.
Alien Abduction Insurance Policies Actually Exist
At least some of these insurance policies are real[1]. An insured person can file a claim after being abducted. The money could be used to pay for psychiatric or medical care, lost wages, or any other damages resulting from being abducted.
A claim can also be filed by a beneficiary if an abductee is never heard from again. Most life insurance policies won’t pay out on a missing person, so there could be some real value here.
Should You Buy One?
While there are a ton of unusual insurance policies available on the market[2], few seem to be as objectively difficult to prove as alien abduction. Can you prove to an insurance company that you were abducted? Probably not.
Normally, you purchase insurance against a specific event because you believe yourself to be susceptible. I imagine that UFO chasers & researchers who frequent scenes of encounters might be a tad more likely to be abducted.
Maybe it’s worth a thought if you live out in a very rural area where encounters are more common or in a state where a lot of people report being abducted.
Your lifestyle might even be an indicator as to whether or not you’re at risk of being an abductee. There’s even a quiz you can take to find out.
Read The Fine Print
While many of these polices seem to be more like gag-gifts, one policy by the UFO Abduction Insurance company has actually paid out a claim[3]. Their policies are for $10,000,000 but if you read the policy carefully, they only pay out $1 per year.
Judging from their site, it’s difficult to take their policy seriously as it’s definitely marketed as a fun gift, vs. financial protection for a true alien abduction. Additionally, the fact that they don’t request any personal information besides a name indicates it might not even be a true insurance policy.
Alien Abduction Insurance – A Fun Gift
For the most part, medical insurance companies already cover a lot of what abductees claim to experience. Psychiatric care and therapy tend to be part of the policy regardless of whether the cause is alien or not.
Buy alien abduction insurance if you want, but it’s probably best not to take it too seriously. It’s more like buying a gag certificate online than an actual insurance policy regulated by the law.

Do we all need one?
Doubt it. I think they’re more like a gag-gift type thing.
